Prespan lake

Surrounded by high mountains on all sides, Prespan lake enchants with its wonderful natural beauty. While the mountain tops of Galičica are still covered in the first snow, down in the plane, on the lakeside, there are still roses and autumn flowers. According to the famous legend, when walking by Prespan lake Kraljević Marko wished to see the small lake Mala Prespa (Small Prespa). When he climbed on the stone, the strong as he was he left a footprint on it. The piece of the stone van be found there even nowadays, at the border between Macedonia and Greece. It carries his name and attracts a large number of tourists. It is said that if you compare your footprint to the one Marko left on the stone you would definitely be convinced that his shoe size was at least 90.

Prespan lake (Macedonian-- Преспанско Езеро, Albanian-- Liqeni i Prespës, Greek-- Limni Prespa) is made out of lake Velika Prespa (Big Prespa), which spreads over the territories of the Republic of Macedonia, Greece, and Albania and the lake Mala Prespa (Small Prespa), which is located on the territories of both Greece and Albania. The lake Velika Prespa (Big Prespa) is located at the altitude of 853 meters, its surface is 273 km², and its depth reaches up to 54 m. It is 10km away from Ohrid lake with which it is connected through the subterranean channels spreading through the limestone soil. Prespan lake is at the altitude that is 150 meters higher that the altitude of Ohrid lake so the water from it keeps pouring into Ohrid lake. Famous Biljana's springs in Ohrid are actually the place where Prespan lake comes out of mountain Galičica and falls into Ohrid lake. There is an island Ahil (Ail) at the lake of Mala Prespa (Small Prespa). Samuilo brought the body parts of Saint Ahil from Tesalia to this island. On the lake of Velika Prespa (Big Prespa) there are two uninhabited islands: Golem grad (Big town), in Macedonia, and Mali grad (Small town), in Albania.
